HOW LONG HAVE YOU OWNED IT?

I bought this Jaguar E-type in 2011 for £37,000. I was looking for a car at the time and a local classic car dealer got in touch regarding this 3.8-litre S1 FHC. In short, the car is very original, mechanically very good with an interior that has aged beautifully. This is the perfect car for anyone looking to buy an E-type that they can enjoy immediately while also carrying out minor upgrades/refreshes over time. The engine bay and front mechanicals were completely overhauled in 2011 but the engine and gearbox have never been opened to our knowledge.

HOW MUCH HISTORY DOES IT HAVE?

There’s an extensive history file on the car including the original invoice from Jaguar and lots of paperwork regarding previous repairs and events that the car has taken part in. There’s some evidence to support the mileage figure and I know that I am the car’s fourth owner. It is currently insured for £50,500.

HAS THIS E-TYPE BEEN MODIFIED?

There are no actual modifications, just what I’d term minor ‘modernisations’ like brakes that a previous owner upgraded to Jag MkX discs and calipers. Also, installation of polyurethane suspension bushes, a 123 electric ignition system, a modern and more efficient cooling fan, an alternator and an adaptor to take a modern oil filter. Most original parts have been retained, allowing for a relatively easy return to original spec.

WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?

Although the vehicle has absolutely no rust and is incredibly straight it would benefit from a re-spray so it is probably about a 6/10 currently. All of the door and window seals/rubbers need replacing, too.

WHAT WE THINK IT’S WORTH - £55,000

Russ Smith, CCW’s price expert: ‘An honestly represented car which, as you suggest, is ideal for someone who wants one to use – perhaps on driving tours – rather than polish in fields. Presentable enough, but beauty treatments can maybe come later when funds allow. It’s certainly had the right money spent on it. E-type values have fallen in recent years but I still think that you have underrated this car. This is what I’d expect it to sell for.’
