David’s pick of the week: Porsche 924 Le Mans

This isn’t just any Porsche 924. It’s one we know well, having tested it on Classic Car Weekly – and it’s been treated to a painstaking restoration by the people who know it best. Back in 2016 it appeared on Porsche’s stand at the NEC during that year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, where it appeared as part of a tribute to 40 years of the Stuttgart sports car specialist’s ‘transaxle’ models, which also include the 944, 928 and 968. But while it being a Le Mans special edition – and one of only 37 sold in the UK in look-at-me Alpine White – makes it stand out, what really marks this one out as being something special is that it’s been comprehensively restored by Porsche’s own experts, as part of a competition by its dealer network to bring classics back to life.

That means it’s had hundreds of man hours lavished on it, and when we tested it back in December 2016 we reckoned it’d cost somewhere close to £40,000 to have a 924 restored to the same standard. Look at it that way and the £20-25k estimate given to this one by Silverstone Auctions ahead of its Race Retro sale this weekend makes it look very tempting indeed.

Sure, it’s far from being the cheapest Porsche 924 out there, but try finding another like it.
